I’ve always had a fetish for bicycles: They exist outside their function as a means of transport rather they are a beautiful magical universal symbol of freedom and adventure accessible to all or able to be modified to accommodate everyone.
As a kid, my time machine was a purple two-wheel Dragster bicycle with white sidewalls, a light-generating dynamo, a sissy bar, a banana seat, butterfly handlebars, and three-speed center shifters. The complete bike gave off that curious effect of appearing to move even when stationary as if it was in two places all at once.
Leaning forward, pushing my head between the bars and peddling hard, I could feel the edges of the future rub up against me as I caressed the contours of the road. Time oozed away, like Dali’s melting clocks.
I’m an older man now, fortunate to share my life with a woman who also loves bicycles, together we have had many cycling adventures here in Australia and overseas.
Personal commitments saw us put our plans on hold for a while, now tickets have been purchased, maps drawn up, bikes tweaked for a Summer of cycling in Europe. Soon we ride!
