Warm showers in Germany

The European Union has open borders. No checkpoints or controls, a simple road sign letting you know that whilst cycling you left the Netherlands to arrive in Germany.

We are excited to be riding into Aachen, with its UNESCO world Heritage Aachen Cathedral, resting place of the Emperor (King) Charlemagne. A venerable figure in European political and religious history.

Sometimes we use Warmshowers the worldwide touring cycle hosting network to meet fellow traveler’s, while receiving a locals view of their city. In Aachen we were fortunate to stay with Anna and Dirk in their homely inner city apartment. We shared a scrumptious pumpkin curry served with laughter and stories that make a life. The joy of traveling really is the people you meet and the connections you make.

From Aachen to Cologne on the Rhine River, lined with cruise ships ,cafes bursting with tourists out to see the famous Cologne Cathedral. It’s frightening gargoyles looking down disapprovingly at the throng below.

Cycling along the Rhine River Eurovelo 15 is well signposted and led us effortlessly into Bonn. It’s an ancient Roman outpost and former capital of West Germany. It was market day in the square of the old city. We loaded up on strawberries and fresh plums and camped under heavy skies just short of Remagen. This was a scene of fierce battles during WW2. In the teeming rain we spot otters, hares, red squirrels and buzzards, all seem indifferent to the ways of men.
