Devonport to Deloraine 60 kilometres

I was glad to leave the Spirit of Tasmania. I have a bad case of man flu and that coupled with pitching seas had me feeling decidedly uneasy. Back on the bikes we made our way to our Warmshowers Devonport hosts for the evening, Tim and Ally. We were hoping for a little even ground to pitch our tent instead we received a room of our own and a hot meal from our gracious hosts, wonderful people. Rising early, we cycled out of Devonport taking the back roads through Spreyton, Latrobe, then on to Railton with its topiary animals and life like figures, cute and creepy. The roads were mostly quite with pleasant riding conditions: Spurwinged plovers, black cockatoos, kookaburras and crows kept our company along the Mersey and Meander Valleys, dairy and sheep country. We saw a fair amount of mixed native road kill, wallabies, pademelons, possums and some were obviously fresher than others. On through Kimberly, then Elizabeth Town where we were held up a little by road works as the road joined the highway for the run into Deloraine. After setting up camp along the banks on the Meander River, we spent a leisurely afternoon watching several platypus swim across the surface only metres from our tent, carefree and unperturbed by squawking ducks and gasping tourists. This touring cycle caper has its pleasures.

  1. Forget the hedge animals – show me TC on her bike, not at work and a happy little camper at the start of 12 months off!
    Have fun!
